Background

While many emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region have been enjoying rapid economic growth in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, they are facing many common economic, business and social challenges, such as market deregulation, globalization, economic diversifications, social mobility, unemployment, housing, health and elder care, natural disasters, energy and pollution, corporate governance, and ethical leadership, etc.

Whether these emerging countries’ economic growth is sustainable to some extent depends on their business leadership capabilities and the quality of their public policy making. However, due to the short history of their economic growth, many Asia-Pacific economies may not possess adequate internationally-competitive and socially- responsible leaders who are capable of mitigating the risks in these emerging markets and capitalizing the growth opportunities. Further, given the current dynamics of the world (regional conflicts, resources competition, etc.), there have been inadequate communication, understanding and cooperation among different groups and economies in the regions searching for sustainable and all-win resolutions.

With the strong support of the Macao SAR Government and the China Central Government, the University of Macau (UM) is determined to grow to be a leading university in the world. Together with the UM’s new campus in the Hengqin Island, new economy and industries in Hengqin, and Macao’s unique geographical, cultural, leisure and business support strengths, UM is well positioned to establish a world-class research, training and advisory hub to develop regional policies and nurture the new generation of leaders for the Asia-Pacific region so that they can professionally and responsibly manage the growth and risks.

The Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management (APAEM) with a vision of providing high-quality research on many above-mentioned socio-economic issues and nurturing international- competitive and responsible leaders for the Asia-Pacific region. We hope it will become one of the world-leading business leadership training hubs for emerging economies in the region. It is believed that ethical leadership must be incorporated into an executive learner’s experience along with the traditional emphasis on policy analysis and formulation.
